Empty states are hidden conversion killers

A new user signs up for your product. They land on the dashboard. It's empty. No data, no content, no guidance. Just a blank page with headers and sidebars around nothing.

This is where most churn starts. Not after a week of usage. In the first 30 seconds. The empty state told them "figure it out yourself" when they needed "here's what to do next."

Good empty states do one thing: give the user a single clear action. Not a tutorial. Not a video walkthrough. One button that starts the core experience. "Create your first project." "Import your contacts." "Send a test message."

The best empty states include sample data. Show what the dashboard looks like when it's working. Populate it with example entries they can explore or delete. Let them see the value before they invest the effort to create their own data.

Try this

Sign up for your own product with a fresh account. If you see a blank screen, fix it. Add one clear CTA and sample data.
