Popups after 30 seconds outperform immediate ones

A popup that appears the moment a page loads is an interruption. The visitor hasn't read anything yet. They don't know what the site offers. They don't care about your newsletter yet. You're asking for their email before you've earned it.

The same popup shown after 30 seconds of engagement hits different. The visitor has scrolled, read some content, and demonstrated interest. Now the ask makes sense. "You seem interested - want more of this in your inbox?" That's a reasonable question at this point.

The data backs this up. Popups shown at 0 seconds convert at a low rate with high annoyance. Popups shown after 30 seconds convert at a notably higher rate with low annoyance. The delayed popup gets fewer impressions but more conversions and less brand damage.

Scroll-depth triggers work even better than time-based triggers. A popup that appears after 50% scroll depth catches people who are genuinely reading, not just leaving the tab open. Engagement-based timing converts the highest because it selects for interested visitors.

Try this

If you have an immediate popup, delay it to 30 seconds or 50% scroll depth. Measure conversion rate and bounce rate before and after.
