Default quantity of 1 loses bundle sales
The default quantity on most product pages is 1. This makes sense as a safe starting point. But it's also leaving money on the table for products that are naturally bought in multiples.
Consumable products - supplements, skincare, coffee - are used up. The buyer will need more. Showing "Most popular: 3-month supply" with a slight per-unit discount sets a new anchor. The buyer considers 3 instead of 1, and many choose it.
This isn't about tricking people into buying more than they need. It's about showing them the option they'd choose if they thought about it. Most people buying protein powder will need more next month. Offering a 3-pack saves them a reorder and saves you a transaction cost.
The language matters. "Most popular" works because of social proof. "Best value" works because of savings. "Subscribe and save 15%" works for recurring needs. Each positions the higher quantity as the smart choice, not the expensive one.
If you sell consumable products, add a "most popular" quantity option above the default single unit. Show the per-unit savings. Measure AOV change.
